Grants
Columbia University School of Nursing received two $75,000 “Future of Nursing Scholars” grants funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Carolyn Sun, PhD, associate research scientist, is the principal investigator of a $10,000, 1-year grant funded by the Elsevier Foundation for “The Writing to Improve Nursing Science (WINS) Program.” Columbia Nursing collaborators include Jennifer Dohrn, DNP, director, Office of Global Initiatives; Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research; Kristine Kulage, MPH, director, Office of Scholarship and Research Development
Eileen Carter, PhD, assistant professor, is the principal investigator of the $40,000 “Heroes Implementation Research Scholar Award” for 2017-2018. Funded by the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), Carter’s 15-month project is entitled, “Exploring the Nurse’s Role in Antimicrobial Stewardship: a Multisite Qualitative Study.”
Publications
Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was the co-author of “Demographic, healthcare, and contextual factors associated with smoking status among sexual minority women,” published in LGBT Health.
Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, assistant professor; Allison Norful, MSN, PhD student, were authors of “Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Practice Characteristics: Barriers and Opportunities for Interprofessional Teamwork,” published in Journal of Ambulatory Care Management.
Carolyn Sun, PhD, associate research scientist; Jennifer Dohrn, DNP, director, Office of Global Initiatives; Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research, were authors of “Delphi Survey of Clinical Nursing and Midwifery Research Priorities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region,” published in Journal of Nursing Scholarship.
Catherine Cohen, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow; Pat Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor of Health Policy, were authors of, “Isolation Precautions Use for Multidrug-Resistant Organism Infection in Nursing Homes,” published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
Jean-Marie Bruzzese, PhD, associate professor of applied developmental psychology in nursing, was lead author of “Asthma and subjective sleep disordered breathing in a large cohort of urban adolescents,” published in Journal of Asthma.
Presentation and Honors
Marlene McHugh, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Outpatient Palliative Care” at the Palliative Care Rounds at Montefiore Medical Center.
Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, assistant professor, was elected to the awards committee of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS).
Amanda Hessels, PhD, associate research scientist, was selected as a member of two national research committees: the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP).
Michelle Odlum, EdD, assistant professor, was selected as a 2017-18 HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) Scholar for her project entitled, “Exploring HIV Risk Within the Context of Gender-Based Imbalances in a US Population of Racial and Ethnic Minority Women at Risk for HIV/AIDS.”
Tonda Hughes, PhD, director, Global Health Research, was honored as one of the Global Alliance for Behavioral Health and Social Justice’s Recognition Awards.
Briefs
Joan Miravite ’98 ’01, received the 2017 Award for Advanced Clinical Practice from the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses.
Sam Jaquish ’13 founded NurSearch, a professional networking site specialized for nurses.
Archives & Special Collections of the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library is currently showing the exhibit, “The Health of Humanity: 125 Years of the Columbia University School of Nursing, 1892-2017.” This exhibit is located in the Hammer Health Sciences Center, Lower Level 2, 701 W 168th Street, through May 19th.
