Grants:
Columbia Nursing ranked fifth in NIH funding in fiscal year 2017, reaching its historical high. With $7.4M NIH funding in fiscal year 2017, Columbia Nursing experienced a 64 percent increase in awards from 2016 compared with a 17.4 percent average increase for the top 20 nursing schools and a 6.3 percent increase for all extramural award recipients. Between fiscal year 2009 and 2017, Columbia Nursing saw growth of 134.4 percent in NIH annual awards and rose 10 places in the national rankings (from 15th in 2009 to fifth in 2017).
Publications:
Adriana Arcia, PhD, assistant professor, Janet Woollen, PhD, Department of Biomedical Informatics, and Suzanne Bakken, PhD, Alumni Professor and director, Center for Evidence-based Practice in the Underserved, were authors of “A Systematic Method for Exploring Data Attributes in Preparation for Designing Tailored Infographics of Patient Reported Outcomes” published in Generating Evidence & Methods to Improve Patient Outcomes (eGEMs).
Samantha Stonbraker, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, Arlene Smaldone, PhD, professor and assistant dean for scholarship and research, Heidi Luft ’16, PhD, Linda F. Cushman, PhD, Mailman School of Public Health, and Elaine Larson, PhD, Anna C. Maxwell Professor of Nursing Research and associate dean of scholarship and research, were among the authors of “Associations Between Health Literacy, HIV-related Knowledge, and Information Behavior Among Persons Living with HIV in the Dominican Republic” published in Public Health Nursing.
Yoon Jeong Choi ’15, PhD, and Arlene Smaldone, PhD, professor and assistant dean for scholarship and research, were authors of “Factors Associated with Medication Engagement Among Older Adults with Diabetes: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” published in The Diabetes Educator.
Cindy Veldhuis, PhD, postdoctoral research fellow, and Tonda L. Hughes, PhD, Henrik H. Bendixen Professor of International Nursing and director of global health research, were among the authors of “‘I Fear for My Safety, but Want to Show Bravery for Others’: Violence and Discrimination Concerns Among Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Individuals After the 2016 Presidential Election” published in Violence & Gender.
Presentations & Honors:
Suzanne Bakken, PhD, Alumni Professor and director, Center for Evidence-based Practice in the Underserved, was selected as an inductee into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
Kristine Kulage, MPH, director, Office of Scholarship and Research Development, Arlene Smaldone, PhD, professor and assistant dean for scholarship and research, and Patricia Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor of Health Policy and director, Center for Health Policy, presented “Implementation and Outcomes of a Federal Grant Writing Workshop in a Nursing PhD Program” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2018 Doctoral Education Conference in Naples, Florida.
Kristine Kulage, MPH, director, Office of Scholarship and Research Development, Debra Miller-Saultz, DNP, assistant professor, Sabrina Opiola McCauley, DNP, assistant professor, and Adena Bargad, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Creation and Impact of a Scholarly Writing and Dissemination Course in a Doctor of Nursing Practice Program,” at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing 2018 Doctoral Education Conference in Naples, Florida.
