Fellowship in Palliative Care

Fellows must be enrolled in a Columbia Nursing DNP program or be Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Alumni.

Description

This part-time (2-3 day) Clinical Nursing Fellowship in Palliative and End of Life Care of the adult and family provides the qualified applicant specialized preparation in inpatient and outpatient care as a member of the Palliative Care Team at CUIMC/NYP. While the Fellow participates with medical fellows in academic learning and clinical care of palliative patients, monthly virtual sessions with palliative care nursing faculty add to and enrich the experience.

Objectives

  1. Upon completion of the Fellowship, the APRN will incorporate palliative care knowledge and clinical skill into specialty practice and positions of leadership
  2. Upon completion of the Fellowship, the APRN will have accrued requisite supervised clinical  hours for specialty certification
  3. During and after completion of  the Fellowship, the APRN will develop and complete a scholarly project in collaboration with faculty which may be in the form of a scholarly publication, a research project, or a unique clinical intervention
  4. As Fellowship trained, this APRN will seek to engage, teach, mentor- and in other ways- seek to advance the specialty that is palliative care

Methodology

The Fellow is required to spend 2-3 days per week over the 3 semesters in the inpatient and outpatient service at CUIMC/NYP, participating in educational offerings, IDT meetings, and clinical care. Offsite clinical experiences including international visits can be arranged in discussion with faculty.

Funding

CUPHSONAA and other generous alumni provide funding to cover 3 credits of tuition and a living stipend per semester.

Evaluation

The Fellow receives a letter grade each semester and an evaluation from the mentoring Nurse Practitioner on the Palliative Care Service.
