Overview
Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, is an internationally recognized health services researcher with expertise in studying primary care organizations, health care workforce, teamwork, and quality of patient care, especially for chronic diseases. Poghosyan’s research produces evidence regarding ways to optimally utilize nurse practitioners as primary care providers and build primary care teams to assure patients—particularly racial and ethnic minorities and those living in underserved areas—have access to timely, safe, and high-quality primary care.
Poghosyan is the Principal Investigator on multiple federal and foundation-funded research projects, including those funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the National Institute on Aging, among others. Dr. Poghosyan serves as Executive Director of the Center for Healthcare Delivery Research and Innovation (HDRI), which is a leader in cutting-edge healthcare systems and health services research.
Poghosyan has served as the past Chair for the Primary Care Expert Panel at American Academy of Nursing and AcademyHealth’s Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues interest group’s Advisory Board. Poghosyan will start her position as a member of Board of Directors at AcademyHealth in December 2023 (2024-2026). She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the New York Academy of Medicine.
Poghosyan is the recipient of multiple awards, including the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame from Sigma Theta Tau International, American Nurses Foundation Scholar Award; Mentorship Award, and New Investigator Award from the AcademyHealth Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues; and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar award.

Research
Dr. Poghosyan’s research produces evidence regarding how to assure patients have timely access to high quality primary care. Most of Dr. Poghosyan’s studies focus on transforming organizational structures of primary care practices to promote teamwork and nurse practitioner practice as mechanisms to increase primary care capacity and reduce health disparities.
