Advocacy Training: Turning Research & Practice into Policy and Law
On October 18, 2023, the Center for Health Policy and the Mailman School of Public Health hosted a training titled, “Advocacy Training: Turning Research & Practice into Policy and Law,” with Heather Krasna, PhD, MS, EdM, Ross Frommer, JD and Stephen Ferrara, DNP, FNP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, FNAP, FNAM. The training included both nursing and public health students and focused on the I CAN Act, having students practice advocating either for or against the policy.
Keys Bags Names Words
On November 15, 2023, the Center for Health Policy hosted an in-person documentary screening of Keys Bags Names Words, a documentary looking at the personal and global impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. After the screening, Komal Murali, PhD, ACNP-BC, RN, from New York University’s Rory Meyers College of Nursing facilitated a guided discussion with the attendees.

Improving Care Quality for Older Adults
On April 24, 2024, the Center for Health Policy hosted a Webinar titled, Improving Care Quality for Older Adults: The Health Policy Landscape in 2024, with past Health and Aging Policy Fellows (HAP). Our panel included Tara A. Cortes and Brynn Bowman and our moderator was Poki’i Balaz.
Insights from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Policy Summit
On May 6, 2024, the Center for Health Policy hosted a panel discussion titled, “Insights from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Policy Summit,” where students shared their insights and reflections from their recent participation in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Policy Summit. The panelists were Susan Maloney, PhD Student, Madeleine Chen, DNP Student, and Taylor Onstott MDE Student.
Community Screening: Keys Bags Names Words
On June 11, 2024, The Center for Health Policy & Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain co-hosted an in-person documentary screening titled, “Keys Bags Names Words." We invited Northern Manhattan residents to explore the power of storytelling to spark positive change. The documentary film Keys Bags Names Words sheds light on what each of us can do to promote our own brain health and connect to those around us who have dementia.

Healthy Policy, Anti-Trans Legislation, and the Fall of Roe
Columbia Nursing’s Center for Sexual and Gender Minority Health Research and Center for Health Policy hosted a panel on November 16, 2022, entitled “Attack on bodily autonomy: Healthy Policy, Anti-Trans Legislation, and the Fall of Roe.” The expert panel discussed the ways in which policies restricting abortion rights and trans rights are inextricably linked.
Nurse State Legislators: A Briefing with Lieutenant Governor Bethany Hall-Long and Darlene J. Curley
On February 13, 2023, the Center for Health Policy, alongside the Biden Institute and the University of Delaware School of Nursing, hosted a panel discussion on nursing, policy, and advocacy. Indigenous Perspective on Aging and Policy with Dr. Poki'i Balaz
On April 25, 2023, the Center for Health Policy hosted a seminar titled, "Indigenous Perspective on Aging and Policy," by Dr. Poki'i Balaz. This was co-sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association Aloha Chapter, Columbia World Projects, Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Program, and Hawai'i Pacific Gerontological Society.
The Lost Art of Dying: What a Medieval Book Teaches About Living Well
On May 2, 2023, the Center for Health Policy hosted an in-person event titled, “The Lost Art of Dying: What a Medieval Book Teaches About Living Well,” by Lydia Dugdale, MD, MAR. Dr. Dugdale discussed The Lost Art of Dying, which reexamines death and how we can transform how we live each day, including our last.

The Future of Nursing Home Quality
On April 13, 2022, the Center for Health Policy, the Center for Improving Palliative Care in Vulnerable Adults with Multiple Chronic Conditions, and the Alumni Association hosted an expert panel discussion titled “Policy Dialogue for the Future of Nursing Home Quality.” The expert panel discussed the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine’s recently released report, “The Quality of Care in Nursing Homes,” which examines how our nation delivers, regulates, finances and measures quality of nursing home care, including the long-standing challenges brought to light by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Report
Columbia Nursing and NewYork Presbyterian hosted a panel discussion “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Report: Charting a Path to Achieving Health Equity” on June 2, 2021. The expert panel discussed the goals of the National Academy of Medicine’s recently released study, which charts a course for the next decade of the nursing profession.
