Grants and Gifts

• Suzanne Bakken, PHD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, The Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, received an 18-month $750,000 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for WICER 4 U, an extension of the WICER (Washington Heights and Inwood Informatics Infrastructure for Comparative Effectiveness Research) study.
• Columbia Nursing raised $46,000 on Giving Day which included a trustee match, a 50 percent increase from 2012.
• Columbia Nursing received a $200,000 grant from the Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation: $80,000 to the Louis and Rachel Rudin Foundation Oncology Scholarship; $80,000 to two undergraduate nursing scholarships and $40,000 to a new post-doctoral fellowship in palliative and end of life care.
• Columbia Nursing received a $45,000 award from the Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation for graduate students pursuing the pediatric palliative and end of life care subspecialty.

Publications

• Dawn Dowding, PHD, professor, authored “Using Computerized Decision-Support Systems,” published in Nursing Times, “An Agenda for Clinical Decision Making and Judgment in Nursing Research and Education” published in the International Journal of Nursing Studies and “Are Nurses Expected to Have Information Technology Skills?,” published in Nursing Management.
• Laurie Conway, MPhil, CIC, was the lead author of “Tensions Inherent in the Evolving Role of the Infection Preventionist,” published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC). Other authors on the article included Monika Pogorzelska-Maziarz PhD, MPHc, May Uchida RN, MPhil, GNP-BC a, Patricia Stone PhD, RN, FAANc, and Elaine L. Larson RN, PhD, FAAN, CIC.
• Rita Marie John, DNP, EdD, director, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program co-authored “Everything the Nurse Practitioner Should Know about Pediatric Feeding Tubes,” published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
• Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, MPH, RN, was an author of “The Influence of Management and Environment on Local Health Department Organizational Structure and Adaptation: A Longitudinal Network Analysis” published in Journal of Public Health Management and Practice.

Honors and Presentations

• Penelope R. Buschman, MS, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN, director, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Program, presented “Predictors of Retention for Behavioral Health Nurses” at the American Academy of Nursing.
• Rozelle Corda, FNP, assistant professor, presented “Evidence Based Management Strategies to Reduce Surgical Site Infections in Neonates Undergoing Cardiac Surgery,” at the Congenital Heart Disease-Clinical Care and Translational Research meeting in Shanghai, China.
• Rita Marie John, DNP, EdD, director, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, presented a plenary and a breakout session at the 30th Anniversary North Carolina School Nurse Conference.
• Will Enlow, DNP, ACNP, director, Continuing Nursing Education, assistant director Nurse Anesthesia Program, presented a workshop on careers in nursing to high school and college students at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Briefs

• Lucille Corva, CPNP, clinical director, PNP program, volunteered at the medical tent during the NYC marathon.
• Jean Marie Rubsam-Kane, DNP, MS, CPNP, assistant professor, was elected to serve on the New York State Trauma Advisory Committee (STAC) this year. The STAC advises the New York State Department of Health on trauma and disaster care within the state.
• FNP students raised more than $1,000 for Clinica de Familia clinic in La Romana, Dominican Republic at a fundraiser which included a bachata dance class and a DJ.
• Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education – ACME* Invited Comments Regarding Reaccreditation: The nurse-midwifery education program at Columbia University, New York, NY, is scheduled to be reviewed by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education – ACME* (Board of Review (BOR) for continuing accreditation in July 2014.  Please email any written third party comments to jburke@acnm.org or mail to ACME at 8403 Colesville Rd., Suite 1550, Silver Spring, MD by January 13, 2014.  Your comments will be included with other program materials at the July 2014 meeting.  In all instances, your comments must directly relate to the continuing accreditation of this program and the ACME Criteria for Programmatic Accreditation, December 2009 (revised 1/2013, or, revised 6/2013).
