Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, co-authored “Towards Improved Decision Support in the Assessment and Management of Pain for People with Dementia in Hospital: A Systematic Meta-Review and Observational Study,” published in Health Services and Delivery Research; “The Future of Home Health Care: A Strategic Framework for Optimizing Value,” published in Home Health Care Management & Practice, and “Automated Identification of Wound Information in Clinical Notes of Patients with Heart Diseases: Developing and Validating a Natural Language Processing Application,” published in International Journal of Nursing Studies.
Amanda Hessels, PhD, associate research scientist, was the lead author of “Incidence and Risk Factors for Health-Care-Associated Infections after Hip Operation,” published in Surgical Infections; and “Relationship Between Patient Safety Climate and Adherence to Standard Precautions,” published in American Journal of Infection Control.
Kathleen Hickey, EdD, associate professor, was the lead author of “Improving Utilization of the Family History in the Electronic Health Record,” published in Journal of Nursing Scholarship.
Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, professor of Nursing in Biomedical Informatics, was an author of “Assuring a Strong Foundation for our Nation's Public Health Systems: A Commentary,” published in Nursing Outlook.
Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean, scholarship and research, and Pat Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor of Health Policy, were authors of “The Impact of Medicare Part D on the Proportion of Out-of-Pocket Prescription Drug Costs Among Older Adults with Diabetes,” published in Diabetes Care.
Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean, scholarship and research, was an author of “Maternal Attitudes, Normative Beliefs, and Subjective Norms of Mothers of 2- and 3-Year-Old Children,” and “Maternal Feeding Practices, Meal Selection Behaviors and Concordance with USDA Recommended Guidelines in 2 and 3 Year Old Children,” published in Journal of Pediatric Health Care; and “Decreased Fetal Hemoglobin Over Time Among Youth with Sickle Cell Disease on Hydroxyurea is Associated with Higher Urgent Hospital Use” published in Pediatric Blood and Cancer.

Michael Greco DNP, director, Nurse Anesthesia program, presented “My Heart Skips a Beat Every Time We Meet: Anesthesia Case Studies in the Electrophysiology Lab,” at the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists 2016 National Congress.
Amanda Hessels, PhD, associate research scientist, was named a nurse of the year finalist, research from the March of Dimes. In addition, she served as master of ceremonies and panel moderator for “Real world experiences: A nursing perspective,” at the Hackensack Meridian Health 12th Annual Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Conference.
Kathleen T.Hickey, EdD, associate professor, received the Clinical Article of the Year Award from the American Heart Association Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing (CVSN).
Kristine Kulage, director, scholarship and research, was appointed editor of The Catalyst, the newsletter of the Society of Research Administrators International.
Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, associate professor, presented two presentations “HIV & Aging,” and “ HIV & Hepatitis C,” at the European HIV Nursing Conference.
Marlene McHugh, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Overview of Oncology Care Management Strategies to Support Members with Cancer Related Conditions: An Interdisciplinary Approach at CMO- Montefiore Care Management conference. Hilda Haynes-Lewis ’99 was also a presenter.
Briefs
Sarah Collins '09 received the Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award from the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). The purpose of the Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award is to recognize the contribution of a new investigator who has conducted nursing research that has the potential to enhance the science and practice of nursing.
Jasmine Travers ’16 received the Gerontological Society of America Dissertation Award.

Linda Armstrong, a peer mentor working with Columbia Nursing’s Office of Student Engagement, led a group of student volunteers at the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this October. Participants wore Columbia Nursing scarves, helped with crowd control along the route, and cheered on participants.
