Leadership and Growth: Sigma’s Alpha Zeta Chapter Inducts New Members at 60th Anniversary Ceremony
102 Columbia University School of Nursing students and leaders were inducted into the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) on May 13, 2024.
Established in 1964, the chapter is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Sigma aims to develop nurse leaders anywhere to improve health care everywhere by providing professional development services focused on education, leadership, career development, evidence-based nursing, research, and scholarship. Over 540 chapters exist around the world, including in Armenia, Colombia, Ghana, Ireland, and Swaziland.

The Alpha Zeta Chapter has over 4,000 members who exemplify nursing excellence. It funds competitive research proposals, supports students attending scholarly conferences, offers professional development to members, mentors members in leadership roles, staffs local health events, and collects donations for the community.
During the ceremony held at Alumni Auditorium, Yolanda E. Stevenson, MS ’22, pediatric complex care manager at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, gave the student address. She encouraged inductees to get involved in the various initiatives that the chapter offers to grow as a member.
“You will find leadership that will challenge you to move beyond your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to step up and follow through,” said Stevenson.
