Assistant Professor Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, named Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Scholar
Columbia Nursing Professor Named a 2013 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar
Prestigious Award for Assistant Professor
(New York, NY, September 11, 2013) – Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, MPH, RN, an assistant professor at Columbia University School of Nursing, is one of 12 nursing educators in the nation to be named a 2013 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation nurse faculty scholar.
Under the Nurse Faculty Scholars program, Poghosyan will receive a three-year, $350,000 grant to help carry out her research and further her academic career. The award is given to junior faculty members who show exceptional promise as future leaders in academic nursing.
For her research project, Poghosyan will study the effect of nursing practice environments in primary care settings on the quality of care for patients with chronic diseases -- as well as their effect on nurse practitioner turnover and job satisfaction rates.
“Patients, health care organizations, and nurse practitioners all benefit if we can identify ways for creating an optimal organizational climate for NPs to deliver high-quality care,” Poghosyan said. “This award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is particularly important in light of the growing role that nurse practitioners will be playing in providing health care. With our national shortage of primary care physicians, an aging society, and the fact that up to 32 million additional Americans will have health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act, we need to take steps to ensure that nurse practitioners are in a position to deliver the most effective care possible.”
The goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program is to develop national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards for outstanding junior nursing faculty. The program aims to strengthen the academic productivity and overall excellence of nursing schools by providing mentorship, leadership training, and salary and research support to faculty members. Poghosyan is part of the program’s sixth cohort.
To receive the award, scholars must be registered nurses who have completed a research doctorate in nursing or a related discipline and who have held a tenure-eligible faculty position at an accredited nursing school for at least two and no more than five years. Grants are made to sponsoring institutions and must follow Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funding guidelines.
The Nurse Faculty Scholars program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered through the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. It is directed by Jacquelyn Campbell, PhD, RN, FAAN, who is the Anna D. Wolf chair and professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
