Annual Pinning Ceremony Welcomes New Nurses
A Columbia Nursing tradition dating back to the 1860s continues. On August 7, 2025, Columbia University School of Nursing held its annual Masters Direct Entry (MDE) pinning ceremony. 175 students received their pin, symbolizing their preparedness to serve the health needs of society after completing the school’s rigorous program.
Just last year, the pin’s insignia was redesigned, to be more representative of the school. Assistant Professor Heidi Hahn-Shroeder, DNP, began the ceremony by providing welcoming remarks. Jeanne Churchill, DNP, assistant professor, then shared the history of the ceremony. After these remarks, candidates received their pins from an individual of their choice who supported them through their journey. Some students invited their families or friends to provide this honor, another new change to the ceremony. The event ended with a recitation of the Columbia Nursing pledge by all of the candidates, led by Clinical Nursing Instructor Mary Moran, MS.
The pinning ceremony continues to be a monumental milestone, celebrating the achievements of those entering the nursing profession.
