Richard Garfield, DrPH Appointed CDC Advisor

Richard Garfield, DrPH, Henrik H. Bendixen Professor of Clinical International Nursing, has been appointed advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assist in its reorganization of international programs and the development of the Center for Global Health. CDC, in addition to domestic activities, has staff on the ground in more than 60 countries around the world. As a lead agency of the U.S. government, CDC already has a major role in efforts to reduce malaria, HIV, and to provide immunizations for preventable diseases. Dr. Garfield has long led efforts to organize public health activities in less developed countries and is now analyzing the impact of non-communicable diseases for the World Health Organization. He is also coordinating research to estimate direct and indirect deaths due to conflict for the fourth round of the Global Burden of Disease project. His work with the CDC includes the design of what will be a major new set of US government global health initiatives as well as efforts to extend existing programs aimed at strengthening health services infrastructure, planning capacity and global health
