Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, associate research scientist, was the first author of three papers: Engaging Hospitalized Patients in Clinical Care: Study Protocol for a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial,” published in Contemporary Clinical Trials; “Review and Analysis of Existing Mobile Phone Applications to Support Heart Failure Symptom Monitoring and Self-Care Using the Mobile Application Rating Scale,” published in Journal of Medical Internet Research; “Identifying the Complexity of Multiple Risk Factors for Obesity Among Urban Latinas,” published in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health.

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, associate professor, was the first author of three papers:  “Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices,” published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology; “Clinical and Gender Differences in Heart Transplant Recipients in the NEW HEART Study,” published in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, and “A Rolling-Horizon Pharmacokinetic Pharmacodynamic Model for Warfarin Inpatients in Transient Clinical States,” published in Personalized Medicine.

 

Carolyn Herzig, PhD, senior project directorElaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research, and Pat Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor in Health Policy, were authors of “Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection Reduction and Bundle Compliance in Intensive Care Units: A National Study,” published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology.

 

Presentations and Honors

Penelope Buschman, assistant professor, presented “Columbia University School of Nursing-Commitment to Serious Illness Care,” at the National Academy of Medicine

 

Mary Byrne, PhD, Stone Foundation and Elise D. Fish Professor of HealthCare for the Underserved (in Nursing) and Professor of Anesthesiological Sciences (in Anesthesiology), participated in a roundtable on nursing science at the University of California.

 

 

Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, associate research scientist, was awarded a five-year grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research for “mHealth for Heart Failure Symptom Monitoring mHealth for Heart Failure Symptom Monitoring.” The focus of this grant is on supporting patients with their outpatient symptom monitoring and heart failure self-care management using a new mHealth application.

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

 

Carolyn Herzig, PhD, senior project director, won a Blue Ribbon Abstract award at the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology’s (APIC) annual meeting for her research on infection policies in nursing homes. 

 

Michael Greco, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Keeping the Beat: Treatment Options in the Electrophysiology Lab,” National Association of Veteran Affairs Nurse Anesthetists and “You've Got Rhythm, I've Got Options: Non-Pharmacologic Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation,” at New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, assistant professor, presented “HIV Prevention Advances,” at Icahn School of Medicine's 12th Annual Challenges in Internal Medicine conference, and "HIV Antiretrovirals: From Treatment to Prevention," at the AANP National Conference. 

 

Marlene McHugh, DNP, assistant professor, presented “Columbia University School of Nursing-Commitment to Serious Illness Care, Assessing Progress of End of Life and Serious Illness Care,” at the National Academy of Medicine.

 

Michelle Odlum, PhD, assistant professor, received a Provost Grants Program for Junior Faculty Who Contribute to the Diversity Goals of the University for Understanding the Interaction between HIV and Health Outcomes in a New York City Vulnerable Population of Women Living with HIV/AIDS, 50 and Over.

 

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, assistant professor, participated in "Outside, In – Bringing Health Home: Technology and Patient-Centered Care," a panel discussion sponsored by Politico

 

Sunmoo Yoon, PhD, associate research scientist, presented “Cultural Difference of English and Korean Tweets Mentioning MERS, Mathematical Analysis of Cultural Expressive Forms,” at the NSF Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, at University of California, Los Angeles.

 

Briefs

Fifteen Master's students enrolled in the core Health Policy prepared comprehensive briefs outlining preventive health policies tailored for three states.  The briefs addressed the obesity crisis in Mississippi, and excess alcohol consumption in Maine and Minnesota.

 

Marie Castronovo '12 '15, Amy Pullizzi '12 '15, and Shakhira Evans '12 '15 co-authored an article, “Nurse Bullying: A Review and a Proposed Solution,” in the May-June 2016 issue of Nursing Outlook. 

 

 

Eunice Phillips ’60 was named Citizen of the year on May 10th by the town of Hancock, Maine.

 

Dyan Summers '16 participated in the CUMC Community Forum on Zika on June 2.

 

Several Nurse Anesthesia Master’s students participated at the New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists state meeting. Randy Dalbey presented “Every Breath You Take, I'll Be Watching You: A SRNAs Journey through One Lung Ventilation." Meredith Wing won the 2016 Goldie Brangman Contest for a paper “Glycemic Variations in Type II Diabetics Given Dexamethasone for Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting Prophylaxis.”
