Grants

The school received the following grants:

 

Ruth Masterson Creber, PhD, associate research scientist, is principal investigator of “mHealth for Heart Failure Symptom Management.” The 5-year project is funded by The National Institute for Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health for $928,000.

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, VNSNY Professor of Nursing, is the principal investigator of “Improving Pressure Ulcer Prevention in Skilled Nursing Facilities,” funded for $50,000 from Elderly Health Promotion, Inc.  

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, assistant professor, is the principal investigator of “Collaborative Access for LGBT Adults,” funded for $980,000 from the U.S. Department of Health; Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).  The 2-year project is funded for $980,000. Columbia Nursing collaborators include Walter Bockting, PhD, professor of medical psychology, and Sigrid Gabler, PhD, instructor.

 

JingJing Shang, PhD, assistant professor, is the principal investigator for “Infection Control in Home Care and Predictive Risk Modeling,” a 3-year project funded for $1.4 million by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Co-investigators include Dawn Dowding, PhD, VNSNY Professor of Nursing and Elaine Larson, PhD, associate dean for research.

 

Publications

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, was the lead author of “Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial to Assess the Feasibility of an Open Label Intervention to Improve Hydroxyurea Adherence in Youth with Sickle Cell Disease,” published in Contemporary Clinical Trials and “Community Health Workers as Support for Sickle Cell Care,” published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine.

 

Presentations and Honors

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, VNSNY Professor of Nursing, was elected as fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and will be inducted this fall in Washington, D.C. The following alumni were named as fellows: Sharron Close ’01 ’03 ’11, Maureen Dailey ’10, Mary Dougherty ‘09, Patricia Riley ‘76, Wei-Ti Chen ’98 ’02, JoAnne Silbert-Flagg ’09, and Hussein Tahan ’03.  

 

Lori Lynch, instructor, presented “Care of the Young Obese Patient,” at American Pediatric Surgical Association/American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association.

 

Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Improving Organizational Performance through High-Functioning Teams,” at the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues (IRGNI) Interest Group Meeting

Briefs

Daniel Billings ’15 was awarded the inaugural 2016 Campbell Award from the Columbia Alumni Association. The award is presented to a student at each school who shows exceptional leadership and Columbia spirit. 

 

Hussein Tahan ’03 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Case Management Society of America.
  

Students from the University of Navarra, Spain participated in a 4-week exchange at Columbia Nursing this spring. The students, sponsored by the Office of Global Initiatives, observed nurses at clinical sites, audited classes, and shared their knowledge of Spain’s health care system and the role of nurses in that country.
