Grants

Adriana Arcia, PhD, RN, assistant professor, received a $25,000 grant from the Columbia University’s Provost's Grants Program for Junior Faculty who Contribute to the Diversity Goals of the University to support her research on “Feasibility and Acceptability of an Online Maternity Education Platform.”

 

Mary Byrne, PhD, CPNP, FAAN, director, Center for Children and Families, received a $40,000 grant from the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (CTSA) towards her research project “Trauma Recovery within Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Domestic Sex Trafficking in Young Urban Females.”

 

Amanda Hessels, PhD, MPH, RN, postdoctoral research fellow, received a $39,000 grant from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), APIC Heroes Implementation Research Scholar Award Program to support her research “Proposal for Development, Psychometric and Pilot Testing of Standard Precautions Safety Climate and Observation Tools.”

 

Columbia Nursing received a $25,000 grant from The Lincoln Fund for scholarships for diverse students.

 

Columbia Nursing received $75,000 from the Charles A. Frueauff Foundation; $50,000 to be directed to the school’s new building and $25,000 for student scholarships.

Publications

Dawn Dowding, PhD, RN, VNSNY Professor of Nursing, was the lead author of “Dashboards for Improving Patient Care: Review of the Literature,” published in International Journal of Medical Informatics. She was also an author of “Pain Assessment for People with Dementia: A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews of Pain Assessment Tools,” published in BMC Geriatrics.

 

Michael Greco, DNP, CRNA, assistant director, Nurse Anesthesia program, was an author of “Assessment and Management of the Patient with Atrial Fibrillation for Ablation,” published in Anesthesiology News.

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, FAAN, assistant professor, was the lead author of “Initial Evaluation of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars Program,” published in Nursing Outlook.

 

PhD student Wanda Montalvo, MPhil, RN, was the lead author of “Participant Comprehension of Research for Which They Volunteer: A Systematic Review,” published in The Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Elaine Larson, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate dean for research, was also an author.

 

Pat Stone, PhD, RN, FAAN, Centennial Professor of Health Policy, was an author of “Nurse Workforce Characteristics and Infection Risk in VA Community Living Centers: A Longitudinal Analysis,” published in Medical Care.

 

Mary Tresgallo, DNP, MPH, FNP-BC, assistant professor, authored two book chapters in the Handbook for Pediatric Anesthesia, “Post-operative Pain Management in Sickle Cell Disease for Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy,” and “Intravenous Patient - Controlled Analgesia."

 

Presentations and Honors

Tracy Andrews, DNP, director Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program, and Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, FAAN, assistant professor, were selected as content experts for standard setting for the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

 

Mary Byrne, PhD, CPNP, FAAN, director, Center for Children and Families,  presented “Prison and Community Supports for Optimum Outcomes” at the Interdisciplinary Institute on the Reproductive Health of Incarcerated Women conference at University of Minnesota-Twin Cities School of Public Health.

 

Maureen D. D'Auria ’79 received the 2014 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Award in the Advanced Practice Category.

 

Karen Desjardins, DNP, MPH, assistant dean of Academic Affairs, presented “Patient Safety: Hazards and Near Misses” to the Jewish Home and Hospital Organization. In addition, she presented “Fostering Relationships: At Risk High School Youth and Columbia University Nursing Students” in collaboration with  Isabel Washburn ’13 ’14 at the Annual Mentoring conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

 

Sally Dreslin ’94 was named executive deputy commissioner for the New York State Department of Health.

 

Amanda Hessels, PhD, MPH, RN, postdoctoral research fellow, received the Don and Diva Award from The New Jersey State Nurses Association Institute for Nursing. In addition, she presented “Is There an Impact of Health Information Technology on the Delivery and Quality of Patient Care?”  at the New Jersey-Delaware Valley Annual Healthcare Information Management Systems Society Conference (HIMSS).

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, FAAN, assistant professor, received the Founders Award for Research at the 2014 International Society on Nursing Genetics (ISONG) meeting in recognition of outstanding genetics research and scholarship. In addition, she made two presentations at the ISONG meeting: “Cardiac Genetics: Bridging Clinical Practice and Research” and “Unfolding Case Studies in Cardiac Genetics.” She presented “Inherited Arrhythmias in Cardiomyopathies,” at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions conference and was elected co-chair of the Genetic Expert Panel of the American Academy of Nursing.

 

Nicole Holuba LaMarca, CPNP, MSN, RN, assistant professor, was one of three recipients of the inaugural Outstanding Humanism in Patient Care Award, awarded by Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

 

Nancy Reame, PhD, MSN, FAAN, Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Nursing, was an invited participant in the first Columbia Aging Workshop: The Aging of Mind, Brain and Behavior in Context co-sponsored by the Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center and the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute. Reame provided written testimony about the importance of considering the context of sex and gender across the three theoretical perspectives. Reame also served on the panel that reviewed the American Nurse Association’s statement on nurse fatigue. She also presented the seminar “Why Sex Matters: Scientific, Health Care and Policy Implications” to Columbia Nursing PhD students.

 

Carrie Siefken ’02 was named a 2014 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year.           

 

PhD student Jasmine Travers gave an oral and poster presentation on the work, “Does State Legislation Improve Nursing Workforce Diversity” at the Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees Conference in Washington D.C. The poster received honorable mention. PhD Program Director, Arlene Smaldone, PhD, RN and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Elizabeth Cohn, PhD, RN are co-authors.

 

Two Nurse Anesthesia students, Carol Kenific and Jessica  Szydlowski received scholarships from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Foundation.

 

  Briefs

The office of Diversity and Cultural Affairs sponsored nine Hispanic/Latina students’ attendance of the New York Hispanic Nurses Association Gala.

 

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research to Prevent Infections is now accepting applications for pre-doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. Applications for positions beginning Summer 2015 are due April 1.
