Grants

Suzanne Bakken, PhD, Alumni Professor of the School of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, received a $159,000 grant from the National Institute for Nursing Research for “New York City Hispanic Dementia Caregiver Research Program (NHiRP) - Administrative Supplements for Common Basic Socio-behavioral Mechanisms and Processes that Facilitate or  Impede Self-Management of Chronic Conditions.

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, and Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, associate professor, received a $21,000 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for “Development of Dashboards to Provide Feedback to Home Care Nurses.”

 

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, assistant professor, received a Columbia Nursing Intramural Pilot grant for $9,000 for “An Ecological Understanding of Physical Activity Patterns of Adults Living with HIV Throughout the Lifespan.”

 

Publications

PhD student Ragnhildur Bjarnadottir was the lead author of “Striving For Excellence: Minimum Data Set Coordinators’ Perceptions of their Role in the Nursing Home,” published in Journal of Gerontological Nursing.

 

PhD student Catherine Cohen was the lead author of “Nursing Home in States with Infection Control Training or Infection Reporting Have Reduced Infection Control Deficiency Citations,” published in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology. Pat Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor in Health Policy was also an author.

 

Rozelle Corda, assistant professor, was the lead author of “Reducing Fontan Effusions: A Day Saved is a Dollar Earned,” published in Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

 

Dawn Dowding, PhD, professor, was the lead author of “Using Sense-Making Theory to Aid Understanding of the Recognition, Assessment and Management of Pain in Patients with Dementia in Acute Hospital Settings,” published in International Journal of Nursing Studies.

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, director, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, was the lead author of “Counseling, Screening, and Therapy for Newly-Diagnosed HIV Patients,” published in The Nurse Practitioner. Sigrid Gabler, instructor, was also an author.

 

Pat Stone, PhD, Centennial Professor of Health Policy, was the lead author of “Impact of Laws Aimed at Healthcare-Associated Infection Reduction: A Qualitative Study,” published in BMJ Quality and Safety. Jacqueline Merrill, PhD, associate professor, was also also an author.

 

PhD student Jasmine Travers was the lead author of “Does State Legislation Improve Nursing Workforce Diversity?” published in Policy, Politics, & Nursing Practice. Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, was also an author.

 

Presentations and Honors

Adriana Arcia, PhD, assistant professor, presented “Protocol to Study Usage Patterns of an Online Maternity Education Platform,” at Concordium 2015, in Washington, DC and “Expanding Opportunities and Emerging Experience for Patient Engagement Using Technology Conference,” at the Eisenberg Conference in Houston, TX.

 

Jeffrey Kwong, DNP, director, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, presented “Fostering Interprofessional Teams - Roles for Nurses,” and “Elder LGBT Interprofessional Collaborative Care Program: Initial Findings,” at the 2015 GLMA Nursing Summit Presentation in Portland, OR.

 

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean for scholarship and research, presented “Building Capacity for Evidence-based Quality Improvement: A Unique Multi-dimensional Multi-Disciplinary Training Program at the Academy Health Concordium 2015 conference in Washington, DC.

Briefs

PhD student Allison Norful was appointed to AcademyHealth's Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues (IRGNI) Board as a student member. 

 

PhD student Catherine Cohen was appointed as a student member to the science committee of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS).

 

Janice Izlar ’06 was appointed to the Georgia Board of Nursing.

 

Olivia Velez '06 '11 joined HealthEnabled in Cape Town, South Africa as executive director.
