Suzanne Bakken, PhD, RN, FAAN, Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, was the lead author of “The Effect of a Mobile Health Decision Support System on Diagnosis and Management of Obesity, Tobacco Use, and Depression in Adults and Children,” published in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners. Haomiao Jia, PhD, associate professor of Biostatistics, was also an author. Bakken was also an author of “The Clinician in the Driver’s Seat:  Part 1 – A Drag/Drop User-Composable Electronic Health Record Platform,” published in the Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and "The Clinician in the Driver’s Seat:  Part 2 – A Drag/Drop User-Composable Electronic Health Record Platform,” published in the  Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and “Intercepting Wrong-Patient Orders in a Computerized Provider Order Entry System,” published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

 

Karen Desjardins, DNP, assistant dean, Academic Affairs, was the lead author of “Comprehensive Care Coordination: The Time is Now,” published in Clinical Scholars Review.

 

Michael Greco, DNP, CRNA, assistant program director, Nurse Anesthesia, was a co-author of "Ablation Therapy for Atrial Fibrillation: Implications for Anesthesiologists," published in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia.

 

Carolyn Herzig, MS, senior project director, was an author of “State Law Mandates for Reporting of Healthcare-Associated Clostridium Difficile Infections in Hospitals,” published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology. Pat Stone, PhD, MPH, Centennial Professor in Health Policy, was also an author. Herzig was also an author of “Implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship Policies in U.S. Hospitals: Findings from a National Survey,” published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology. Elaine Larson, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate dean for research, and Pat Stone were also authors.

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP-BC, FAAN, assistant professor, was the lead author of “Cardiac Genetic Testing: A Single-Center Pilot Study of a Dominican Population,” published in Hispanic Health Care International.

 

Rebecca Schnall, PhD, RN, assistant professor, was the lead author of “ mHealth Technology as a Persuasive Tool for Treatment, Care and Management of Persons Living with HIV,” published in Aids and Behavior. Suzanne Bakken, PhD, RN, FAAN, Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics was also an author. Schnall was also the lead author of “Short Message Service Use in Clinical Care through a Simulation Activity,” published in Journal of Nursing Education. In addition, she was an author of “Barriers to and Enablers of Contraceptive Use Among Adolescent Females and their Interest in an Emergency Department-based Intervention,” published in Contraception.

 

Tanyka Smith, PhD, FNP-BC, postdoctoral research fellow, was the lead author of “HIV Sexual Risk Behavior in Older Black Women: A Systematic Review,” published in Women's Health Issues.

Honors and Presentations

Suzanne Bakken, PhD, RN, FAAN, Alumni Professor of Nursing and Professor of Biomedical Informatics, was appointed to the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Health Literacy and to the Board of Directors of the Friends of the National Library of Medicine. In addition she delivered an invited lecture “Weaving a Strong Fabric of Trust for the Learning Health System through Community-Engaged Research with an Urban Latino Population,” in the Flexner Discovery Lecture Series at Vanderbilt University and represented the American Nurses Association at the Forbes Healthcare Summit: Smart Data Transforming Lives.  

 

Kathleen Hickey, EdD, FNP, assistant professor, participated in the development of "My AFib Experience" a tool for patients and families with Atrial Fibrillation released by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. In addition, she was named a member of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Standard Setter for the Advanced Genetics Nursing specialty.

 

Rita John, EdD, DNP, director, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, presented the results of "Buzzing to Lessen Immunization Pain (BLIP)" at a poster presentation for the national meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics with Haomiao Jia, PhD, associate professor, and Jingjing Shang, PhD, assistant professor. In addition,  she presented at the  Joanna Briggs Conference  in Singapore.

 

Arlene Smaldone, PhD, assistant dean, Academic Affairs, presented “Synthesizing Evidence using Systematic Review and Meta-Analytic Methods: Opportunities for Scholarship and Collaboration between DNP and PhD Students" at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Doctoral Education Conference in San Diego.

 

Tanyka Smith, PhD, FNP-BC, postdoctoral research fellow, presented “HIV Risk among Older Urban African American Women,” at the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care 27th Annual Conference in Miami, Florida.

Briefs

Carol-Ann Cenac '05 '08 received the  Professional Woman of the Year Award from the National Association of Professional Women.

 

Five Columbia Nursing alumni received Nurse Anesthesia Alumni Leadership Awards during an event in honor of National Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Week, January 25 – 31: Don Boyd ’06, Denise DiGioia ’87, Kerry Halleran ’11, Kim Lanfranca ’06 and Laura Hogan Smith ’96 ’01

 

 

Two alumni published books: Rosalie Lombard ’51 wrote a memoir on working as a nurse, Adventures of a Grenfell Nurse  and Katherine Klimacek O'Connor Beiter ‘63 wrote  Comfort in Dying—Reflections of a Hospice Nurse.
