Libraries
At the Medical Center Campus, the Augustus Long Library occupies four floors of the Hammer Health Sciences Center and is one of the largest medical center libraries in the United States. The library receives over 4,300 current journals, has a significant rare book and special collections section, and a large microcomputer and multi-media center. With your alumni library card, you may use the library, which is located at 701 West 168th Street. For hours, call (212) 305-3692.
At the Morningside Campus, the University libraries hold over 5 million books, nearly 2.5 million microforms, and more than 11 million manuscripts. With a university library card, you have free reading and stack privileges; for a monthly fee, you may have borrowing privileges at Butler and other Columbia libraries. Recreation
The Bard Athletic Club at the Health Sciences Campus encompasses a 20 yard swimming pool, three squash courts, a gymnasium, an exercise room, Nautilus and Universal exercise equipment, dumbbell sets and benches, stationary bicycles, rowing machines, lockers, showers, and saunas. Membership is open to all Columbia University Health Sciences students, residents, fellows, employees, and alumni. The facility is handicapped accessible. In addition, there is a full aerobic exercise program, basketball league, and volleyball group. For information about membership fees and hours, call (212) 305-6853.At the Morningside Campus, the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Physical Fitness Center features two full size gyms, two swimming pools, squash and racquet ball courts, weight-lifting equipment, an indoor track, and a basketball court. Tennis is available year round at the Tennis Center at Baker Field. Call (212) 942-7100 for information about court fees and reservations.
Bookstores
The University Bookstore, operated as a concession by Barnes and Noble, Inc. has two branches. One is at the Health Sciences Campus, located at 3954 Broadway. It carries texts for courses at the Medical Center, as well as general interest books, school and stationary supplies, and a full line of Columbia mugs, sweatshirts and T-shirts. Lamont Sanctuary
The Lamont Nature Sanctuary offers a respite from the city's concrete and granite. The Sanctuary's trails wander through 23 acres of woodlands and nature tracks atop New Jersey's Palisades. For information, call (914) 359-2900.
University Lectures
The University Lectures feature distinguished members of the University faculty. Lionel Trilling began the series more than 35 years ago. Three University Lectures are presented each year, in the fall, winter and spring. Call (212) 854-5423 for scheduling information.
