Join us for a conversation with May Yong, MS'14 – chef and restaurant owner turned nurse – and Julie Johnson, BS'79 – nurse turned winemaker and farmer. Following the discussion, enjoy a cooking demonstration by May, and a wine tasting reception by Julie.
- Former nurse, Julie is the owner of Tres Sabores, a winery and farm nestled in Napa Valley. Wine offers the ultimate social experience when enjoyed in moderation with thoughtful, healthy food and great company. It is important to address the main topic of gathering – preventing personal burn out in health care professionals by assessing personal nutrition, education, and connectivity to the land. Understanding regenerative farming practices and how it links to personal health is truly connecting your mind and body. Learn about practical lessons in moderate wine consumption, the old and new prohibition movements, and women in wine (WineSense).
- Former executive chef and restaurant owner, May is a current NP that advocates for the emerging field of Culinary Medicine. It is one of the most effective tools clinicians have for educating ourselves and our patients about eating better. This new evidence-based field blends the art of food and cooking with the science of medicine. Empowering ourselves with this knowledge makes us more likely to improve our own health, educate our patients, and prevent burnout by viewing cooking in a new light. Educating ourselves about Culinary Medicine, opening teaching kitchens, and re-committing ourselves to disease prevention are some of the ways that we can take our power back and find inspiration again, all while enjoying our own time spent in the kitchen.
