Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Induction Ceremony

On Monday, May 16, 2011, Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, inducted 102 new members. Membership is by invitation to baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing.

More than 340,000 members have been inducted worldwide, and with more than 120,000 active members, Sigma Theta Tau is the second largest nursing organization in the world. Members reside in more than 90 countries and sixty-one percent of active members hold masters' and/or doctoral degrees.

Established in 1964, Alpha Zeta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau celebrates its 47th anniversary this year. The chapter has over 2,000 members and sponsors an annual CUSON alumni reunion breakfast as well as funds competitive research proposals and sends students to scholarly conferences. Alpha Zeta Chapter is composed of members from Columbia University Teacher's College and Columbia University School of Nursing.

This year, the keynote speaker at the induction ceremony was CUSON Dean Bobbie Berkowitz. The research award was presented to Argerie Tsimicalis, PhD for her study, "Testing the usability of SiSom, an interactive assessment tool to enhance the symptom management of children with cancer in Northern Manhattan."
